Another
student of Wai Xianxian was Kojo Tatei. Very little is known
about this martial artist.
We
know that he was a descendant of one of the original 36 Chinese
families, that his family were very wealthy merchants, and
that he studied under Wai Xianxian in Okinawa.
We
also know that he was Kanryu Higaonna’s second teacher
after Aragaki left for China in 1870, and that he helped finance
Higaonna’s trip to Fuzhou in Fujian.
Furthermore,
his family supported Wai Xianxian’s Dojo which was found
in the Okinawan district of Fuzhou and which has more recently
become known as the Kojo Dojo.
As
a classmate of Aragaki’s and a student of Wai Xianxian,
Kojo Tatei would have also taught the Shorei style of To-Te.
